Xfer Records has finally shipped Serum 2, the long-awaited follow-up to one of the most widely used wavetable synths in electronic music production. For MPE users, the headline isn't a brand-new feature — Serum has supported MIDI Polyphonic Expression for years — but a set of quieter refinements that make the existing implementation noticeably easier to work with.

What's New for MPE Players

Serum 2 keeps the same core MPE routing that producers have relied on since the original Serum added support for controllers like the Roli Seaboard and the LinnStrument, but the Global tab now includes a couple of small additions that matter more than they look. There's a new option to auto-map pitch bend directly to the X-axis, removing a step that previously required manual mod-matrix routing for anyone moving from a different MPE-capable instrument. Alongside it, Serum 2 adds a toggle to enable or disable bi-directional control on the X-axis, giving sound designers finer control over how slide gestures translate into pitch movement — useful for anyone building patches around a Seaboard, an Osmose, or an Erae Touch.
