What it did not arrive with was MPE. That gap has now closed. Version 1.1, released on 28 August 2026, adds full MIDI Polyphonic Expression support, and for expressive controller players it turns Ultra from an interesting curiosity into something worth auditioning seriously.
What Ultra Actually Is
Ultra comes from Nigel Stanford, a name more people know from his viral audio-visual work than from plugin development. The synth is built around what he calls the UltraWave engine, and the architecture is deliberately broad: five sound sources per patch, dual filters, and 32 voices of polyphony. Rather than picking a lane — wavetable, FM, virtual analog — Ultra lets you stack different synthesis types inside a single voice and treat them as one instrument.
That design decision is precisely why MPE matters here. A five-source voice has a lot of internal surface area. Without per-note expression, all of that complexity has to be sculpted with automation, macros, or preset switching. None of these are coordinated. That's rather the point. MPE has crossed the threshold where it's no longer a differentiating feature that developers announce with fanfare; it's a checklist item that flagship synths are expected to tick.
