Big synth releases get the headlines, but the maintenance updates that follow often matter just as much for players building a serious MPE rig. That's the case with Zebra 3.0.1, the first free update to u-he's semi-modular flagship since its full release this spring, which shipped on July 13, 2026 with a short but pointed list of changes — two of which go directly at how the synth handles MIDI Polyphonic Expression.
What Changed for MPE Players
The update adds a new preference for per-voice pitch bend, letting each note in an MPE performance carry its own independent pitch bend state rather than sharing a single global value. Control A, B, C, and D — Zebra's four assignable macro knobs — now function as per-preset macros rather than global settings, with their offsets addressable via MIDI CC. That means a macro mapped to filter cutoff in one preset can be repurposed entirely differently in the next, and the whole thing can be automated or performed live via an external controller without renegotiating the mapping each time. Rounding things out, FM operator and envelope parameters can now be modulated beyond their normal limits, opening up more extreme, unstable-sounding textures for sound designers who like pushing FM synthesis past its comfortable range.
