FM synthesis has a reputation for being precise but a little stiff — great for bells and electric pianos, less obvious as a home for expressive, per-note performance. Twisted Electrons is out to change that impression with the TWISTfm, an eight-voice polyphonic FM desktop synthesizer that pairs vintage Yamaha chips with full MPE support.
Two FM Chips, One Expressive Instrument
At the core of the TWISTfm sit a pair of Yamaha OPL-3 YMF262 chips, the same FM silicon that powered classic soundcards and arcade boards. Twisted Electrons runs them in tandem with dual stereo DACs to deliver eight independent voices, each routed through its own analog multimode filter. That per-voice analog filtering is unusual for an FM instrument and gives the TWISTfm a warmer, more malleable top end than a purely digital FM engine.
Sound design happens across two engine modes: a 4-operator layout for dense, evolving textures and a simpler 2-operator mode for classic FM basses and leads. Twisted Electrons rounds out the synthesis side with 15 filter modes, adjustable saturation, and dual resonance options, plus a 128-step polyphonic sequencer for building parts without leaving the hardware.
Full Three-Dimensional MPE
The headline feature for expressive players is the TWISTfm's MPE mode, which supports all three standard dimensions of per-note control: pitch (X-axis glide), timbre (Y-axis, mapped to CC74), and pressure (Z-axis aftertouch). Paired with an MPE controller like a ROLI Seaboard or an Expressive E Osmose, that means every note played into the TWISTfm can carry its own independent bend, brightness, and pressure curve — a level of nuance that's rare in FM instruments at this price point.
The synth also includes a built-in ribbon controller for hands-on pitch and modulation work when an external MPE controller isn't at hand, plus a browser-based editor for deeper patch programming and firmware management. The current 3.2 firmware adds looping envelopes, giving sound designers a way to build rhythmic, self-modulating patches without external LFOs eating up modulation slots.
Why It Matters for MPE Players
Most MPE-focused synths lean toward subtractive or wavetable engines — think Arturia Pigments or u-he Zebra. FM synthesis has been comparatively underserved in the expressive-controller space, despite FM's long history of producing dynamic, harmonically rich tones that could benefit enormously from real-time timbral control. The TWISTfm gives MPE players a genuinely different sonic palette: metallic bells that can be pressed into growling basses mid-note, or plucked tones that bloom into pads as pressure increases, all without programming a single modulation matrix entry.
For composers and sound designers who already own an MPE controller and are looking to diversify beyond the usual subtractive and wavetable sounds, the TWISTfm is one of the more interesting hardware releases this year.
