Most conversations about MPE hardware collapse into two options. You either want something that plays like a piano — the Osmose, the Seaboard — or you want a grid, which means the LinnStrument or a Sensel Morph overlay. Both camps have strong arguments. Both also assume the layout question is settled.

The Striso Board doesn't accept that premise, and it's worth understanding why even if you never buy one.

What It Physically Is

The Striso Board is a portable instrument with 61 silicone buttons arranged in an isomorphic layout. Each button responds to pressure and to subtle left-to-right and forward-back finger movement, giving three continuous dimensions per note — amplitude, pitch, and timbre — from a control surface roughly the size of a hardback book.

The buttons are the defining characteristic. Where the Seaboard asks you to press into a continuous soft surface and the LinnStrument asks you to slide across a flat pad, the Striso gives you a discrete, tactile target that then moves under your finger. You know where the note is without looking, and expression happens as a second gesture on top of a confident first one.

That's a meaningfully different ergonomic proposition. On a continuous surface, note accuracy and expression share the same physical action, which is why players report a long learning curve. On the Striso, they're separable.

The Layout Argument

The board uses an isomorphic note arrangement, meaning a given interval has the same physical shape regardless of key. A major third is the same finger movement in C as it is in F#. A chord voicing you learn once transposes everywhere without relearning.

Pianists sometimes find this claim underwhelming, because twelve years of muscle memory already solved that problem for them. For everyone else — and particularly for producers who play keys competently but not fluently — isomorphic layouts remove a genuine barrier. The Intuitive Instruments Exquis makes a related argument with its hexagonal pads, and the fact that two independent designers arrived at similar conclusions suggests the idea has legs.

The trade-off is real and should be stated plainly: an isomorphic instrument is not a keyboard, and nothing you know about keyboards transfers directly. You are learning a new instrument. Whether that's exciting or exhausting depends entirely on where you are in your musical life.

Open Firmware

The Striso runs open-source control firmware, publicly developed and regularly updated. For an instrument in this category, that matters more than it might for a mass-market controller.

Expressive instruments live and die on configuration details — pitch bend range, note-off behaviour, how pressure curves map, whether the pitch dimension quantises to scale degrees. Those details differ per player and per musical context. When the firmware is open, the settings you need either already exist or can be added, and the instrument doesn't become obsolete when the company's roadmap moves on.

That last point is not theoretical. The MPE hardware market has seen enough corporate turbulence in recent years that longevity has become a legitimate purchasing criterion, not a hypothetical one.

Where It Sits Practically

If you're weighing the Striso against the more familiar options, the honest framing is this:

Choose a keybed-style controller if you already play piano well and want expression added to existing technique. Your muscle memory is an asset and you should not throw it away.

Choose a grid if you want isomorphic benefits with a large, established community, extensive documentation, and a layout that also works well for guitar-derived thinking.

Choose the Striso if you want discrete note targets with continuous expression, portability that fits in a backpack, and firmware you can inspect and modify. It's the option for players who found continuous surfaces imprecise and grids visually demanding.

None of these is objectively correct. The MPE ecosystem's genuine strength is that the protocol is shared — whatever surface you choose, the same synths respond to it. That means the hardware decision is about ergonomics and taste, not about locking yourself out of software.

Setting It Up

Whichever expressive surface you're using, the same first-run checklist applies. Confirm the pitch bend range matches between controller and synth — mismatches here account for the overwhelming majority of "MPE isn't working" reports. Confirm your DAW is in MPE mode rather than treating the input as a standard MIDI channel. And spend time with the timbre dimension deliberately, because it's the axis most players leave unmapped and the one that most distinguishes an expressive performance from a merely dynamic one.

For instruments with pressure-sensitive buttons in particular, it's worth checking pressure curve settings before deciding you don't like the feel. Default curves are set for a hypothetical average player, and a small adjustment often transforms the experience.
