Physical modeling synthesis has quietly become one of the more interesting corners of the plugin market this year, and the latest arrival comes from an unexpected pairing: reFX, the company best known for Nexus, has teamed up with independent developer Tiagolr to release Rippler, a commercial dual-layer physical modeling synth with deep MPE support baked in from the ground up.
From Free Passion Project to Commercial Release
Rippler's lineage matters here. Tiagolr built RipplerX as a free, open-source physical modeling synth that developed a devoted following among sound designers for its ability to generate convincing acoustic-adjacent tones — strings, mallets, membranes — without a single sample involved. reFX approached Tiagolr to co-develop a commercial successor, and the result keeps the modal synthesis core intact while wrapping it in a considerably more polished production package: a dual-layer architecture, a built-in effects section, and expanded resonator modeling.
That kind of partnership — a boutique open-source developer teaming with an established commercial plugin house — is still fairly rare in this space, and it's worth watching whether it becomes a template for other independent MPE and physical-modeling projects looking to scale up without losing their identity.
How It Works
Rippler generates sound through banks of resonators — virtual objects that behave like physical materials — with bi-directional energy coupling between them, meaning excitement in one resonator can feed into and shape another, much like how a real drumhead's vibration interacts with the shell beneath it. The instrument ships with twelve resonator models, including String, Drumhead, Beam, Djembe, Membrane, Vibraphone, Bell, Marimba, Plate, and both Open and Closed Tube variants, spread across two independent synthesis layers that can be blended, layered, or set against each other.
Each layer runs through its own effects chain, and a shared master chain sits on top, drawing from a set of 13 effects including EQ, distortion, a phaser, compressor, chorus, tremolo, two delay types, reverb, a particle effect, and a limiter.
MPE and Expressive Playing
For MPE players, the headline feature is that Rippler treats per-note expression as central rather than bolted on. The synth responds to full MPE data, standard aftertouch, and microtuning via MIDI Tuning Standard, meaning a resonator's brightness, damping, or pitch can shift independently note by note when played on a Roli Seaboard, Osmose, or any other MPE-capable controller. Rippler also accepts audio input routed directly into the resonator system, letting the resonators be excited by an external signal rather than only an internal oscillator — a feature that opens up some unusual hybrid sound design possibilities for anyone running a mic or another synth into the plugin.
Availability and Pricing
Rippler is available now for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats, with a 30-day trial. It launched at an introductory price of $99, rising to $129 after September 13. The plugin ships with 441 factory presets, giving newcomers a substantial starting library before diving into the resonator architecture themselves.
It's a notable release for two reasons beyond the sound design itself.
