On 10 September 2026, Noise Engineering released 16 new firmwares for its Legio module platform, bringing the official total to 23 algorithms — plus a growing set of third-party options. Every one of them runs on any Legio module, and every one of them is free to anyone who already owns the hardware.

That last point is the story. For musicians who have spent the last few years building expressive rigs around MPE controllers, the Legio model answers a question that keeps coming up: how do you get the range of an expressive plugin collection out of a hardware system without buying twenty modules?

What Landed

The new firmware batch splits roughly into voices and processors.

On the generator side, the release is heavily percussive: a kick voice, snare voice, tom voice, cymbal voice, a cowbell, a deliberately unhinged "crazy drum," and — most interesting for expressive players — a percussive physical modelling voice.

On the processing side there is a pitch-tracking downsampler, a mid/side dynamics processor, and a trio FX firmware bundling a wavefolder, waveshaper and chorus into one algorithm.

Crucially, Noise Engineering states that each new algorithm uses all of the module's interface controls, with CV-controllable parameters. That is not boilerplate. A firmware that leaves a knob unassigned is a firmware that wastes a modulation destination, and modulation destinations are the currency of an expressive rig.

Why This Matters for MPE Players

MPE gives you three continuous dimensions per note: pitch, timbre and pressure, on top of the note itself. Getting those into a modular system means converting them to CV, and that is a solved problem — modules like the Polyend Poly 2 and Expert Sleepers FH-2 will hand you per-voice pitch, pressure and slide as separate CV outputs.

The unsolved problem has always been what happens next. You now have three expressive CV streams per voice, and if you want polyphony you need several voices' worth of destinations. Traditional Eurorack answers that with money and HP: more oscillators, more filters, more VCAs.

A platform like Legio changes the arithmetic. One module becomes a percussive physical modelling voice this week and a mid/side dynamics processor next week, at no additional cost. If you are experimenting with how pressure maps onto a physical model versus how it maps onto a wavefolder, you can actually run that experiment instead of theorising about it.

Physical modelling is the pairing to watch. Physical models respond to continuous excitation in a way subtractive voices do not — pressure genuinely changes the character of the model, not just its volume. Feeding MPE pressure CV into a percussive physical modelling firmware is one of the more musically honest uses of expressive control in a modular context.

The Honest Caveats

Legio is a two-channel, small-format platform, not a polyphonic voice card. Building a four-voice MPE rig means four Legios, or accepting that your modular side is monophonic while your plugin side carries the polyphony. Many players already work that way, but it is worth saying plainly.

Firmware swapping is also not instantaneous. This is a load-and-reboot workflow, not a preset change mid-set. Plan your patches before the gig.

And the usual expressive-modular caveat applies: CV conversion introduces latency and resolution limits that a plugin receiving MPE directly does not have. For slow, gestural pressure work this is irrelevant. For fast per-note pitch articulation it is something you will hear on some interfaces.

The Broader Trend

The Legio release sits alongside a wider shift in 2026 toward platforms rather than fixed-function boxes — the same logic behind Squarp's Hapax shipping substantial MPE sequencing features in a firmware update, or Expressive E's Ctrl-e bundling multiple engines behind one controller.

The underlying bet is the same in each case: expressive playing is a moving target, and hardware that can be redefined after you buy it is hardware that keeps up. Twenty-three firmwares on one module is a fairly convincing argument for that bet.

If you already own a Legio, the update costs you nothing but an afternoon. If you are building an expressive modular rig from scratch, it belongs on the shortlist.
