Most MPE controllers are excellent at generating rich, per-note expression data — pitch bend, pressure, timbre — but very few tools let players actually see that data as they play. A new desktop application called MPE Insight, developed by Christophe Kalkau, aims to close that gap by turning live MPE input into real-time visual architecture.

Plug in and watch your playing come alive

MPE Insight works with any class-compliant MPE controller. Plug one in, and the app renders exactly what your controller is sending — per-note pitch bend, pressure and aftertouch, and expression data — through a choice of visualization styles. Available renderers include bars, rings, particles, a flythrough tunnel, a kaleidoscope, contour maps, a spider web pattern, and a DNA helix, giving players a genuinely wide range of ways to watch their own performance unfold.

Beyond being visually striking, the different rendering styles serve a practical purpose: some make subtle pressure changes easier to spot, while others are better suited to tracking fast pitch-bend gestures across multiple simultaneous notes — something that's difficult to parse from a standard MIDI monitor's scrolling numbers.

Eight modules, one shared canvas

The application is built around eight modules that can be dragged, resized, and rearranged freely: Aura, Grand Staff, Note Timeline, Expression Breakdown, MIDI Stream Log, PB/Mod, and an on-screen Keyboard. That modularity means a player can build a custom layout — for instance, pairing the Grand Staff view with the Expression Breakdown module to watch note content and per-note modulation side by side, or isolating the MIDI Stream Log for a more technical, debugging-oriented session.

For educators and controller manufacturers, this kind of layout flexibility also makes MPE Insight useful as a demonstration tool: a wide, glanceable visualization can make it immediately obvious to a student or customer what "per-note expression" actually means, in a way that abstract explanation often can't.

Demo mode and recording

Players without a controller on hand yet — or those evaluating the software before buying MPE hardware — can explore the whole system through a built-in Demo Mode, which drives every module with simulated MPE data. Once a controller is connected, MPE Insight can record full performances, including MIDI clock, and the exported files preserve the actual tempo that was played rather than a quantized approximation. That makes recorded sessions genuinely usable afterward, whether for review, teaching material, or archiving a particularly good improvisation.

A launch offer, and a growing niche

MPE Insight launched with an introductory price of €24.49, down from its regular €34.99, a discount that ran through mid-July. Regardless of pricing, the app's existence points to something broader happening in the MPE space: as more musicians adopt expressive controllers, there's growing demand for tools that make the invisible layer of per-note data tangible — not just for performance, but for understanding what a controller is actually capable of. Visualization tools like this sit alongside monitoring utilities and editor plugins as part of a maturing toolkit around the MPE specification, one that increasingly treats expressive data as something worth seeing, not just hearing.
