Most conversations about expressive control focus on the big surfaces: Continuums, Seaboards, Osmoses, ERAE touch pads. But a lot of expressive playing still happens on ordinary keyboards, and a lot of ordinary keyboards are missing the basics. A new controller called MOD POD targets exactly that gap.
Announced in early August 2026 and shipping now for $189 / €149.95, MOD POD is a compact USB MIDI controller that does nothing but expression. No keys, no pads, no transport section — just pitch bend, modulation, sustain, aftertouch, portamento and two assignable macros in a box measuring 130 × 84 × 51 mm.
Why a dedicated expression box makes sense
The obvious objection is that every decent MIDI keyboard already has wheels. True — but two situations break that assumption, and both are common among expressive players.
The first is hammer-action and stage pianos. Instruments like the Nord Electro, Kawai VPC1 and most digital pianos have superb keybeds and no pitch bend, no mod wheel and often no aftertouch at all. Players who want a weighted action as their master controller have been stuck choosing between feel and expression for years. A small box that sits to the left of the keys resolves that without replacing the instrument.
The second is laptop-only production. When the studio collapses down to a laptop on a train or in a hotel room, modulation becomes mouse-drawn automation. MOD POD's developer describes the product as a response to exactly that: a tactile companion for the moments when you have no controller at all. At pocket size it travels the way a MIDI keyboard does not.
There's a third case that matters specifically to MPE users: desktop and hardware synths played from sequencers. If you're driving a Eurorack MIDI-to-CV interface, a desktop synth or a groovebox like an MPC or Maschine+, real-time modulation usually means turning a device knob. MOD POD's TRS MIDI ports make it a standalone modulation source in that chain.
What's on the panel
The layout is deliberately conventional: a pair of wheels for pitch bend and modulation, two assignable knobs on the top surface, a pressure pad for aftertouch, and a sustain button. Everything is freely mappable, as on a traditional MIDI keyboard, and a CONFIG desktop app handles deeper setups.
The sustain implementation is more considered than you'd expect from a compact device. It offers three modes — latch, smart and tight — selectable from a hardware button, which is a meaningful detail for anyone who performs with long, overlapping sustain gestures rather than simple on/off pedalling.
Connectivity covers USB-C plus 3.5 mm TRS MIDI in and out, and all three ports both transmit and receive. Power comes over USB-C bus power; using it with standalone hardware means bringing a wall adapter or battery pack. There is no Bluetooth or wireless MIDI, which the developer has defended on latency grounds — a defensible call for a device whose entire purpose is real-time gesture.
Where it fits in an MPE rig
It's worth being precise about what MOD POD is and isn't. It is not an MPE controller. It sends channel-wide expression: one pitch bend stream, one mod stream, one aftertouch value. It does not send per-note data, and it will not turn a standard keyboard into a Seaboard.
What it does do is complement MPE gear. Many MPE surfaces are excellent at per-note articulation and awkward for global gestures — a slow filter sweep across a whole chord, a macro morph over eight bars, a sustain hold under a phrase. On a LinnStrument or an ERAE, those global moves usually mean assigning screen real estate away from playing. Putting them on a separate physical device keeps the expressive surface free for notes.
For players whose main instrument is a weighted keybed and whose MPE work happens in software, MOD POD also pairs sensibly with tools like MPE Emulator, which converts channel-wide input into per-note MPE data. Feed it aftertouch and macro movement from a dedicated pad and the results get noticeably more musical than mouse automation.
The catch
$189 is not cheap for six controls, and the comment sections have said so loudly. The developer's answer is straightforward: it's a small independent product without the supply chain of a large manufacturer, and $189 is retail before VAT and import costs. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on whether the specific gap it fills — expressive control on an instrument that has none — is your gap.
