A common assumption among people considering an MPE controller is that the controller is only half the cost — that a serious expressive rig also means buying serious expressive plugins. It's a reasonable worry when the flagship MPE instruments run well into three figures.

It's also wrong. Some of the best MPE implementations available in 2026 cost nothing, and at least one of them is the reference point other developers get measured against.

Surge XT Is the Obvious Starting Point

Surge XT is a free, open-source hybrid synthesizer. Its history explains a lot about why it's good: originally a commercial product, it was released into open source by creator Claes Johanson in September 2018 and has been maintained since by a volunteer team that develops it in public on GitHub.

For MPE purposes, three things matter.

It was designed with MPE in mind, not retrofitted. Per-note pitch bend, pressure and slide are wired into the voice architecture and routable as modulation sources, rather than bolted onto a small number of fixed destinations. That distinction is the difference between a synth that responds to expression and a synth that merely accepts it.

Its microtuning support is unusually deep. Scala files, MTS-ESP, and per-channel tuning are all handled, which makes Surge XT one of the few free plugins that holds up if you play in non-standard tunings — an overlap that matters, since a lot of MPE players arrive from that direction.

It has an institutional endorsement. Roger Linn Design points LinnStrument owners at Surge as a recommended companion synth, with setup notes on its own site. When the maker of a €1,000+ controller tells you the free synth is the one to use, that's a meaningful signal.

The preset library is large and covers virtual analog, wavetable and FM territory, and Surge XT will load Serum-format wavetables if you already have a collection.

Vital's Free Tier

Vital is a spectral warping wavetable synth with MPE support and an interface built around live visual feedback — animated modulation routings, filter response curves, oscilloscopes and spectrograms that update as you play. That visual layer is genuinely useful when you're learning MPE, because it shows you what your pressure and slide gestures are doing to the signal path rather than leaving you to infer it by ear.

The catch is the tiering: only the basic version is free, with larger wavetable and preset content reserved for paid tiers. The free tier is a complete synth and more than enough to learn on, but it isn't the full instrument.

Where the Free Tier Actually Stops

Being clear about the limits is more useful than a longer list.

Free MPE synths are strongest in synthesis. Subtractive, wavetable, FM and additive engines are well represented, and physical modeling has improved substantially through independent and open-source developers. Where the free field thins out is sampled and orchestral material. Recorded instruments require recording sessions, editing and licensing, and that work rarely gets given away — so if your interest is expressive strings, winds or brass played from an MPE controller, expect to pay at some point.

The other limit is support and stability expectations. Open-source projects like Surge XT are well maintained, but the release cadence is community-driven and bug reports go to a tracker, not a support desk. For most users that's a fine trade at zero cost; for anyone delivering on a deadline it's worth knowing where you stand.

A Sensible First Hour

If you've just connected an MPE controller and want to actually feel what it does, a workable sequence is: install Surge XT, confirm your DAW is passing MPE through correctly, and start from a preset explicitly labeled for MPE. Play slowly enough to hear one dimension at a time — pressure alone, then slide alone — before combining them.

The most common early frustration isn't the synth at all; it's a pitch bend range mismatch between controller and plugin, which makes slides sound wrong in a way that's easy to misattribute to the instrument. Check that both ends agree, usually at 48 semitones, before concluding anything about the sound.
