Five years after the original Osmose redefined what a keybed could feel like, Expressive E has released a controller-only edition of the instrument. The Osmose CE became available on April 29, 2026, and it marks a deliberate shift in strategy for the French company: instead of pairing its touch- and pressure-sensitive keybed with a built-in synthesis engine, the CE ships as a dedicated MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) controller designed to drive external plugins and hardware.
What's different from the original Osmose
The first Osmose paired its keybed with the EaganMatrix synthesis engine, the same physical-modeling core found in Haken Audio's Continuum. That combination made the Osmose a self-contained instrument, but it also meant the price tag reflected a full synthesizer, not just a controller.
The Osmose CE removes that engine entirely. In its place, Expressive E ships Ctrl-e, a free companion application built in collaboration with Synapse Audio, Applied Acoustics Systems (AAS), Kilohearts, GForce, Dawesome, and Vital. Ctrl-e handles the mapping layer between the keybed's gestures — key position, pressure, and side-to-side motion — and whatever software instrument sits downstream. Critically, every factory preset in Ctrl-e ships pre-mapped to the keybed's gesture vocabulary, so musicians can plug in and start playing expressively without manually assigning MPE dimensions to each parameter.
At $999, the Osmose CE undercuts the original by a wide margin, positioning it as an entry point into high-resolution expressive playing rather than an all-in-one workstation.
No subscription, no lock-in
One detail worth calling out: Ctrl-e is included at no extra cost, with no subscription required. That's a meaningful decision in a market where companion software increasingly comes gated behind recurring fees. Because Ctrl-e works with plugins from AAS, Kilohearts, GForce, Dawesome, Vital, and Synapse Audio out of the box, Osmose CE owners get a reasonably deep library of MPE-mapped sound sources on day one, with the option to expand into any other MPE-compatible instrument as their setup grows.
Why this matters for the MPE ecosystem
The Osmose CE lands at a moment when MPE support has become close to table stakes among serious synth developers. Arturia has expanded MPE and MTS-ESP tuning support across its V Collection instruments, including the AUGMENTED line and Pigments.
