When Expressive E unveiled the Osmose CE at Superbooth 2026, most of the attention went to what the controller doesn't have: a built-in synth engine. By stripping out the EaganMatrix sound engine that powered the original Osmose, the company brought the price of its acclaimed expressive keybed down to $999 for the 49-key model and $1,199 for the 61-key version. But the more interesting part of the story is what replaced that internal engine — a software ecosystem called Ctrl-e, and it's worth a closer look at how it actually works.

A Keybed Built to Feed Other Synths

The Osmose CE keeps the exact key mechanism from the original instrument. Every key reads polyphonic aftertouch, per-note pitch bend, and continuous pressure and release data, and the controller recognizes seven distinct expressive gestures: tap, press, pitch bend, vibrato, shake, strum, and note-off. That gesture vocabulary is transmitted as standard MPE data over both USB-C and 5-pin MIDI, so in principle the CE can drive any MPE-aware software or hardware synth.

What Ctrl-e Actually Bundles

Ctrl-e is a companion software instrument that ships with the controller and hosts more than 900 presets curated from a roster of third-party synth developers, including Synapse Audio, AAS, Kilohearts, GForce, Dawesome, and Vital. Rather than building one flagship engine the way the original Osmose did, Expressive E is leaning on partnerships: each contributing developer's engine is mapped to the CE's eight pre-mapped macros per preset, so a player can pick up a Vital patch or a Kilohearts patch and immediately have it responding to the keybed's pressure, slide, and vibrato gestures without manual MIDI mapping.

This is a meaningfully different approach from most controller-plus-software bundles, where the included instrument is usually a single stripped-down synth designed to upsell a full version later. Ctrl-e is closer to a curated preset browser sitting on top of several independent synth engines, unified by a common mapping layer tuned specifically to the Osmose keybed's gesture data.

Why Unbundle the Synth in the First Place

Pricing has been one of the persistent barriers to MPE adoption. Flagship expressive controllers have typically launched well above $1,000, and the original Osmose's all-in-one design meant paying for a full synth engine even if a player already owned several MPE-capable instruments. By separating the keybed from the sound source, Expressive E is betting that more musicians will buy into three-dimensional expressive playing if the entry point is lower — while still giving buyers a reason to stay inside the Ctrl-e ecosystem rather than immediately routing everything into a DAW's own instruments.

It also reflects a broader pattern across the controller market this year: makers are increasingly treating the physical gesture surface and the sound engine as separable products, rather than tightly coupled ones. That mirrors how MPE itself works as a standard — one gesture vocabulary that's meant to be routable to whatever synth a player wants, not locked to a single proprietary pairing.

Where It Fits in a Studio

Because the Osmose CE outputs clean MPE over USB-C or 5-pin MIDI, it works alongside DAWs with native MPE support — Bitwig Studio's dedicated MPE editor, Ableton Live's Wavetable and Sampler, or Logic Pro's MPE-aware instrument track — just as easily as it works with Ctrl-e on its own. For players who already have a synth stack they like, Ctrl-e functions as a fast way to explore the keybed's expressive range on day one, without waiting to build MPE mappings into every third-party plugin individually.

For anyone comparing MPE controllers this year, the CE is a useful data point in a market that's clearly moving toward unbundling hardware from sound engines — and Ctrl-e is the clearest example yet of what a manufacturer-curated alternative to "bring your own synth" can look like in practice.
