Fragments: Granular Playback Rebuilt for Expression
The headline feature in 6.1 is Fragments, a new granular playback mode added to Bitwig's Sampler device. Fragments generates up to 256 independent grains per voice, each with its own playback rate, direction, position, and size — a level of density that enables everything from subtle textural shimmer to completely deconstructed, abstract soundscapes.
What makes Fragments particularly interesting for MPE players is how naturally it maps to per-note expression parameters. Fragments also includes new repitch modes inspired by vintage hardware samplers: Analog mode adds tape saturation and warmth, while Digital mode emulates the gritty character of early 90s hardware samplers. These aren't just aesthetic choices — they affect how pitch shifting interacts with grain boundaries, giving each mode a distinct sonic identity.
Updated FM Synthesizer
Alongside Fragments, Bitwig 6.1 includes a revamped four-operator FM synthesizer. Key improvements include:
- Frequencies set as ratios with offsets rather than absolute Hz values, making harmonic relationships intuitive to program
- Optional self-modulation per operator, enabling feedback-driven waveform shaping
- A noise generator with resonant low-pass filter for adding inharmonic texture
- A modulation matrix for flexible routing between operators and performance parameters
For MPE use, the modulation matrix is the critical addition. You can now route MPE expression parameters (per-note pressure, slide, pitch deviation) directly into operator ratios or modulation depths, creating FM timbres that evolve differently for each finger on the keyboard. Bitwig's MPE implementation continues to be the deepest available in any DAW. When you plug in an MPE controller, Bitwig recognizes it automatically and applies per-note expression throughout the signal chain.
This matters because MPE support varies enormously across DAWs. Ableton Live has solid MPE support introduced in Live 11 and improved in Live 12, but Bitwig's architecture was built with per-note expression in mind from a much earlier stage, and that depth shows in edge cases: complex polyrhythmic note articulations, unusual legato behaviors, and high-density expression data (like that generated by a Continuum Fingerboard) all route more predictably in Bitwig than in competing platforms.
