Arturia has released MiniFreak 5.0, a free firmware and plugin update that does the one thing owners have been asking for since the sampler arrived: you can now load your own samples and wavetables. The update landed on 15 September 2026 and covers both the hardware synth and the MiniFreak V plugin.

It has been a long road. Firmware 2.0 added wavetables in 2023. Version 3.0 added sampler and granular engines in 2024. Both shipped with the same limitation — you could use Arturia's content and nothing else.

What You Can Actually Load

The format constraints are specific, and worth knowing before you start preparing files.

Samples import as WAV, AIFF or FLAC. The engine stores them at 12-bit / 32 kHz, with a maximum length of 6 seconds each. You do not need to convert anything yourself — MiniFreak handles the conversion on import. Drag and drop works through the MiniFreak V plugin, which acts as the transfer route to the hardware.

Wavetables must be mono, 24-bit, 512 points — the standard single-cycle format, which means libraries built for Pigments and most third-party wavetable collections will load directly.

The update also includes a new bank of 23 presets.

The 12-Bit Ceiling Is a Feature

A 12-bit / 32 kHz storage format with a six-second cap reads like a limitation, and in one sense it is. But it is also the reason the MiniFreak's sampler and granular engines have the character they do. Grain-based playback of a slightly grainy source is a well-established route to sounds that feel textured rather than clinical, and the format keeps you honest about sample selection — six seconds forces you to choose the interesting part.

For sound design work, the practical implication is to prepare your source material rather than dumping raw recordings in. Trim to the most gesturally useful section. Normalise. If the source has a long tail you want, loop it inside the engine rather than trying to fit the whole decay into the six seconds.

Where Expression Comes In

This is the part that needs care, because MiniFreak's expressive capabilities are frequently overstated in forum threads.

The MiniFreak's own expression model is built around its keybed aftertouch, its two capacitive touch strips, and a deep modulation matrix — not around per-note MPE. Arturia maintains a support page listing MPE compatibility across its range, and it is worth checking that page against any specific title rather than assuming. Within Arturia's catalogue, per-note expression support is concentrated in the software instruments — Pigments being the obvious reference point.

So what does 5.0 change for someone who plays an MPE controller?

Practically, it changes what you can build. The granular engine is the one that most rewards continuous control — grain position, grain size and density all have strong, audible relationships to a single parameter, which is precisely the profile of a good pressure or slide destination. Being able to point that engine at your own source material means you can now design the sound around the gesture rather than the other way round.

Practically, it does not change the control path. Driving MiniFreak from a Seaboard, LinnStrument or Osmose means using it as a single-channel instrument: set the controller out of MPE mode, map pressure and any auxiliary axis to modulation matrix destinations, and treat it as a monotimbral expressive voice. That works well for leads and evolving textures. It will not give you independent per-voice movement inside a chord.

Layering Strategy

The more interesting workflow for MPE players is to treat MiniFreak as a layer rather than the main voice. Put a genuinely per-note-expressive plugin on your MPE channels for the moving, articulated part of the sound, and use MiniFreak underneath for a textural bed driven by aftertouch or a pedal. You get the grain character of the hardware without pretending it does something it does not.

This is also where the user wavetable import earns its keep. Building a wavetable from a rendered pass of your own MPE performance — capture a pressure sweep, export it, convert to 512-point frames — gives you a MiniFreak oscillator whose morph axis follows a gesture you actually played. It is a slow workflow, but it produces layers that sit with expressive material far better than a generic factory table.
