Getting an MPE controller talking properly to a DAW has historically involved more manual configuration than it should. Ableton Live 12 has quietly removed a chunk of that friction for one of the most widely used expressive keyboards: Live now ships with native Control Surface support for the Expressive E Osmose, and MPE mode is enabled by default for the Ctrl-e plugin.
Neither change is headline-grabbing, but together they meaningfully shorten the distance between plugging in and playing.
What a Control Surface Script Actually Does
A Control Surface script is Live's mechanism for knowing what a piece of hardware is, rather than just receiving anonymous MIDI from it. Without one, your controller is a generic MIDI input and every mapping is your responsibility. With one, Live can handle bidirectional communication — sending state back to the hardware, lighting up controls, keeping displays in sync, and routing expression data correctly without you configuring channel zones by hand.
For MPE specifically, this matters more than for a standard keyboard. MPE spreads each note across its own MIDI channel, and misconfigured zone settings are the single most common reason someone's expressive controller "doesn't work" in a DAW. A dedicated script means Live knows the Osmose's channel layout up front.

Ctrl-e and MPE by Default
The second change is smaller but removes a recurring annoyance. Ctrl-e is Expressive E's companion software environment — a browsable library of instruments mapped and optimised for the Osmose keybed, now central to the Osmose CE controller launched at Superbooth 2026 with 900+ expressive presets.
Previously, loading Ctrl-e in Live meant remembering to switch the track's MPE toggle on. Forget, and every preset would sound flat and unresponsive — the classic "my expensive controller feels like a cheap keyboard" symptom. Live now enables MPE mode automatically when Ctrl-e is instantiated.

Checking Your Own Setup
Even with native support, a few things are worth verifying:
Confirm MPE is on at the track level. In Live, MPE is a per-instrument setting. Right-click the MIDI clip's expression area or check the instrument's MPE toggle. All Live 12 instruments support MPE, including Wavetable, Drift and Sampler — but third-party plugins each have their own switch.
Check your pitch bend range matches. MPE conventionally uses a ±48 semitone per-note bend range. If your controller and your instrument disagree, slides will be dramatically over- or under-scaled. Most MPE-aware plugins negotiate this automatically; older ones sometimes don't.
Use the expression editor. Live's MPE editing view lets you draw and correct pitch, pressure and slide data after recording. It's genuinely useful for cleaning up a take rather than re-performing it — and it's the fastest way to confirm that expression data is actually being captured.
Verify in a monitor if something's wrong. A tool like MPE Insight will show you exactly what your controller is transmitting, which quickly distinguishes a hardware problem from a DAW configuration one.
The Broader Pattern
Native controller scripts are a small signal of something larger: MPE hardware is being treated as first-class rather than exotic. Ableton also added Control Surface support for the Osmose in the same cycle that Bitwig continued expanding its per-note editing, and the general trajectory across DAWs is toward MPE being configured automatically rather than assembled manually.
That's the right direction. The technical fiddliness of channel zones and bend ranges has been one of the quieter barriers to MPE adoption — not because it's hard, but because it's the kind of thing that turns a fifteen-minute "try the new keyboard" session into an hour of preference-pane archaeology.
