Aberrant DSP has released version 1.5 of Lair, its reverb plugin, as a free update for existing users. According to Synth Anatomy, the update adds new modes, a gate, 37 presets and native Linux support. Lair is an audio effect, not an MPE device, and the coverage does not mention MPE. Still, it is a good excuse to talk about something many expressive players overlook: how effects fit into an MPE chain.

What's New in Lair 1.5

The update, reported on November 1, 2026, includes:

Lair ships as VST3, AU and AAX on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), plus Windows and Ubuntu 22.04 or later. The article also notes a Black Friday sale of up to 34 percent off plugins and bundles until November 30, 2026; check the developer's site for current pricing.

Where Expression Stops

Here is the key concept. MPE sends each note on its own MIDI channel, so a synth can respond to pressure, slide and pitch bend per note. But an effect that sits after the synth receives only the mixed audio. It cannot know which note produced which sound.

That means a standard reverb treats a chord as one signal. If you press harder on one note and the synth gets brighter, the reverb simply processes the result. This is explained in more depth in our article on where MPE expression stops in effects chains.

This is not a flaw; it is how audio effects work. But it shapes how you should use them with expressive instruments.

Practical Ways to Use Lair With an MPE Synth

1. Use it as a send, not an insert. Keep your expressive synth dry on its own track and feed a portion to a reverb bus. This preserves the clarity of fast gestures and lets you balance space and detail with one fader.

2. Pick modes that suit sustained, evolving playing. Swarm's fragmented repeats can turn a held, pressure-shaped note into a shimmering texture. Cascade's echo clusters may suit staccato phrases. Try both with the same performance and compare.

3. Use the gate for tidy endings. The dry-signal-triggered gate can cut the wash when you stop playing, which helps when expressive tails would otherwise smear across a busy mix.

4. Automate wet amount from a controller. Even though the reverb cannot be per-note, you can map a global control, such as a knob or pedal, to the effect's mix. This adds a second layer of expression without breaking the MPE chain.

5. Layer, don't replace. Because the parallel device mode runs two devices together, you could pair a short, tight space with a long, diffuse one and blend them.

Final Thoughts

Lair 1.5 is a welcome free update, and its new modes are worth trying on sustained MPE material. The larger lesson applies to any reverb or delay: keep the expressive detail in the instrument, and use effects to place that detail in a space.
