MPE support usually lands on instruments that were designed to be sprayed with modulation: granular engines, physical models of bowed strings, evolving pads. It lands less often on emulations of instruments that already have a fixed, well-understood playing mechanism. Which is why Applied Acoustics Systems adding MPE to Lounge Lizard EP-5 in version 5.1 is worth a closer look than the changelog suggests.

An electric piano is not obviously a candidate for per-note pitch bend. But it may be one of the better candidates for per-note pressure.

The Instrument

Lounge Lizard has been in continuous development since 2002, and EP-5 is built on a rebuilt physical modelling core with a dual-engine architecture — one engine modelling tine-based pianos (the Rhodes family), the other reed-based instruments (the Wurlitzer family). Nothing here is sampled. The tone comes out of a simulation of hammer, tine or reed, pickup and the mechanical relationships between them.

That matters for the MPE conversation, because a physical model has parameters that a sample library does not. A sampled Rhodes is a set of recordings indexed by velocity; you can crossfade between them, but the underlying event is fixed at the moment of the note-on. A modelled Rhodes has hammer hardness, pickup distance, decay behaviour and detuning as live variables. They can move while the note rings.

That is precisely the gap MPE fills.

What Per-Note Control Buys You Here

On a real electric piano, most of the expressive character is determined at the strike. Velocity governs hammer speed, which governs how far the tine deflects, which changes the harmonic content — the bark of a hard-struck Rhodes note versus the bell of a soft one. Once the note is sounding, your control is limited to sustain pedal and release timing.

An MPE controller changes that arithmetic. On a device like the Osmose, the Seaboard or a LinnStrument, continued pressure after the note-on is a separate, continuous stream — and in a physical model, that stream can be pointed at parameters that have no acoustic equivalent on the original instrument. Pressure that opens the tone as a note decays. A slide axis that shifts pickup position mid-chord. Per-note pitch bend applied to a single voice inside a held chord — something no Rhodes has ever done, and precisely the kind of thing that makes hybrid parts interesting.

The point is not realism. A Rhodes played with per-note aftertouch is not a more accurate Rhodes; it is a different instrument that happens to share a tone. AAS describes the addition as adding "a modern edge to the classic electric piano," which is an honest framing.

The Practical Caveat

Adding MPE to an instrument with a strong idiomatic identity carries a risk that is worth naming: it is very easy to make an electric piano sound wrong. The tine model's credibility depends on a fairly narrow relationship between strike energy and harmonic content. Push pressure into that relationship without restraint and the result stops reading as an electric piano and starts reading as a synth pad with a bell attack.

The usable range is likely to be narrow and worth finding deliberately. Modest per-note pressure routed to a subtle timbre or decay parameter tends to survive in a mix; dramatic routings tend not to. There is also a mechanical question worth flagging. Electric piano parts are frequently played with dense voicings and sustain pedal, which means many overlapping notes. MPE distributes notes across channels, and dense sustained passages can exhaust the available channels in a 15-channel zone faster than you might expect. Players used to holding lush Rhodes chords may want to check how their controller and their DAW handle channel rotation before committing to a take.

Availability

Version 5.1 also brings a redesigned Settings panel and minor bug fixes. The update is free for all registered Lounge Lizard EP-5 users and available from the AAS user portal. Lounge Lizard EP-5 has a suggested retail price of $199, with an $79 upgrade for owners of previous Lounge Lizard versions. It runs on Windows and macOS in VST/VST3, AU, AAX and standalone formats.

The Broader Pattern

This update sits inside a trend that has been visible all year: MPE is arriving in instrument categories that were never marketed as expressive. Electric pianos, organs, drum plugins, vintage monosynth emulations. Some of those additions are cosmetic. But physically modelled instruments are the genuine case, because a model has continuously variable internal state that a per-note stream can drive.

If you already own EP-5, the update costs nothing and takes an afternoon to explore. If you have an MPE controller sitting next to a Rhodes emulation you have been playing from a standard keybed, this is a reasonable weekend project.
